Can I install parquet flooring over existing sheet vinyl or do I need to rip it up first? It is in good condition, no gouges or cracks, but it does have "contours". It has the fake grout lines and such to make it look like it's supposed to be real tile. The floor itself is good and level.

Although I don't install wood for a living, I have seen it put over old vinyl before. I would ruff up the surface if you are gluing.

Bradlam,
I am currently very close to installing the Bruce parquet flooring over an old sheet type flooring. I pulled up two layers of self--stick "armstrong" type flooring on top of a thin "panaling" that was nailed to the old sheet type flooring. There is another layer of tile under the sheet stuff--I was worried about asbestos the sheet stuff looks suspect and the layer under it looks like it has that "black mastic" backing everyone talks about containing asbestos. They are both definately old enough to contain it--and removing is a huge can of worms--unless you can live with removing it yourself--I know many who do! The dude at home depot sold me this stuff(sorry forgot what it is) its made by Henry and is $18 per Qt. You trowel the stuff on very thin with smooth edge trowel--this stuff is supposed to fill those slight imperfections and prep the surface for glue down flooring.
