I placed a straw trivit on my mahogany dining room table and put a hot dish of sweet potatoes on it on Christmas Eve. I was sick when I picked up the dish and removed the trivit to find that it had ruined the finish. The table is not old. I purchased it new about 10-12 years ago. It is a very large mahogany with an inlaid banding around the edge. It did not hurt the banded area and the damaged spot is about a 4x6 area. It is a white color and is just the odd shape of the trivit. Is there anything I can try to correct this or do I have to have the entire table refinished? I am just sick about it. I have meant for years to purchase a table pad but neglected to do so. Needless to say, I have ordered one now, after the fact!
Please help. Thank you. Kris

Kris:

Since the damage is new, the first option I'll list may work. If that one doesn't, the second one will.

1- Cover the affected area with mayonaise and leave over night. Clean off with warm dish suds in the morning and wipe dry.

2- Make a paste of baking soda and water. Rub the affected area with this using a damp sponge until the white has dissappeared. This will dull the finish slightly. The sheen may be restored with Turtle Wax Polishing Compound and Scratch Remover.

George, thanks for the great idea. I just got the email and checked my fridge. I do not have any mayo, but I do have Miracle Whip. Will that work just as well? I have put it on the spot so I guess I will find out in the morning. It was also the fat free type. I don't know if I should go out and buy some mayonaise or not, but if it doesn't work I will probably give it a try. Thank you so much for responding. This little mishap almost ruined my Christmas, so I was very tickled to read that there may be a remedy. Happy New Year! I will let you know how the table turns out. Best Regards. Kris
