my heat pumpis made by comfortmaker, an it wont heat above68 degrees.i live in north carolina,an this is the ist time it has done this .if i put the thermostat above 70 degrees the breaker on the unit under the house will kick out .could my thermostat be faulty?is there any kind of maintainance that i can do myself to keep it running at peak performance,like cleaning the heating coils?

It's cold there right now, so to maintain your 70 degree heat setting your 2nd stage strip heaters are trying to come on. They are located in the air handler under the house. You have a problem shorting out and could be a hazzard. Call your hvac company and have the strip heat repaired or replaced.
