My 3 year old Berber carpet has always had a problem along one seam. It has been repaired (re-installed)once. A snag appeared yesterday at the same area, and before I could protect it, my 2 year old pulled it into a long runner. Does this need to be repaired professionally, or is there a way I can do-it-myself? Also, generally how long do most carpet installers warranty their installation?

More then likely the seam never got sealed with seam sealer(latex) Snags and runners can be repaired. You need some latex and a small jewlers screwdriver and an ice pick.

It's hard to tell you without seeing it, but most times the yarn will pull through the nylon and not directly out the whole length of the run. You will need to take some scissors and cut the top nylon backing, not all the way through the secondary backing, the whole length, being careful not to cut the yarn. Squirt latex in the first layer of carpet backing you just opened up with the scissors. Now use your ice pick and screwdriver to loop and punch. You should see on the yarn, where it was originally in the backing by a clump of old latex on the yarn. I had to retuff a 10'runner once. It took all day. Very tedious to get it right and not get in a hurry.

Good luck!
