we have a genatrol heat pump, it is winter outside and the units are covered with frost and ice. The unit is in the emergency heat mode . How do we thaw out the units? We have a small room heater on them for now but can I use hot water to get most of the frost off but what about the 1/2 inch of ice on the other unit? ;I can also see frost built up on the inside of that unit. ;Helppppppp !!!!
Thanks for the first reply, we are in the process of heating up the water but can we put salt in it? Will that cause damage to the heat unit? The weather for the last few days has been around the freezing temp and should stay that way for a few more days. We live in Ft. Worth, Tx and the cold wx usually does not stick around this long. Can I just turn on the a/c without unpluging the wire and will that defrost the unit? It is starting to hail now and maybe snow tonight. With the room heater on the one unit it cleaned up nice but the other still has frost and ice built up on the inside but will write again after we put the water on it.

If it were me I would disconnect one lead to the outdoor fan motor, place the unit to a/c,and let the hot gas defrost it.How have your outside weather conditions been?If you do not know how to do it that way safely SHUT POWER OFF TO OUTSIDE UNIT and defrost coil with warm water.MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE ALL FROST AND ICE BUILD UP!!!!!!Once you have completed all that, keep in touch, because if it freezes up again we will try to walk you thru troubleshooting to rememdy why it won't remove the buildup.PDF

You have a big problem in your part of Tx. right now. Your heating unit and home are probably not sized and built for the sustained cold your haveing. Switch to emergancy heat and tough it out. Forget about the heatpump. If you have not had any problems with it till this storm, there is probably nothing wrong with the heat pump. And if there really is a problem, have it checked by a pro.
