I am considering adding an exterior light to my porch. I will be drilling through a header and wood trim to run my wiring outside. Can I simply run the wiring through the hole and attach the fixture directly to the wood trim (1 x 12), or will I need to chisel an opening for a junction box? Thanks for any help.

You must always use a j-box when connecting electrical wiring.
You might want to consider using a reciprocating saw, instead of a chisel, to rough the opening.
