Can kitchen appliances be painted? I would like to paint my old fashioned harvest gold wall ovens to white. If this can be done, is it difficult and are there any precautions.

Hi Carol,

A few years back, I spray painted my portable dishwasher from harvest gold to almond. It looks great, like a new appliance. I got some runs on the back where I can't see them. Later, I painted a refrigerator. Althought I used the same process and paint, I got much different results. The problem with the refrigerator was too many runs in the paint. I sanded and repainted, but got runs each time. I spent weeks on it, drying, sanding, painting, runs, drying, etc.

The difference is the amount of light you will have when painting. The dishwasher was painted in the kitchen with a bright florescent light, and the dishwasher is on wheels so I could spin it around to paint each side under the light. Paint fumes can get pesky inside the house too.

The refrigerator was painted in the darker garage. It was tall and I did not rotate it toward any light source. After several coats of runs and resanding, I gave up and made a florescent light fixture stand to provide even lighting while spray painting. With the good lighting, I got good results.

If you have good even florescent, not incandescent lighting, then start masking and start spraying! Two light coats is all you need. Maybe even 1 coat is all you need if you like what you see. If you have poor lighting, you will have runs and will never be satisfied.

The spray paint finish is as tough and glossy as the original and has looked great for years.

I forgot to mention that you can buy appliance paint at any hardware store or home improvement center. It will say appliance on the can. It is designed to give the same enamel appearance as the original appliance finish. One can gave 2 coats of paint on the dishwasher.
