regarding hanging a sheet of drywall on a wall that is less than 48". Do the pro's hang it perpendicular to joist, in this situation. One less joint to tape on this wall, if done parallel. Also I noticed that installers have used furring strips on ceiling attached to the joist. Why not attach directly to joist. Is this for strength as you would have more attachment surface?

I'm not a drywaller, but I've hung my share.
My take is to hang it with the fewest tape joints possible.
