Hello Folks, I recently had some sheetrock/taping/painting
work done. When the primer went on, the walls looked great.
Then they used a satin enamel(white/eggshell) to paint and
my great looking walls are looking terrible. The bad taping job is shining through depending on how the light hits the wall. I was going to re-paint using a flat to hide some of the flaws. Is this right??? Is there anything I should do to the satin enamel so that the flat will adhere properly?? (Scrape or sand) Does anyone have any suggestions on how to hide a so-so tape job without having to re-do it?? My wife says I'm crazy, but all I see are the flaws. I also have a re-occuring crack over a doorway, any suggestions on this??? Thanks in advance for your help!!! Eric

feihin,
Yes the finish work has to be very good for eggshell or satin and semigloss, especially when there is light shining across the wall, I always pay special attention to the side walls of rooms that have windows at one end, those are the most difficult. The flat paint will help a lot, if the existing paint is latex (more than likely) you can paint right on top of it, be sure to use a quality paint. But the flat is only going to do so much, but like you said, it looked great just primed (flat).
As far as the crack goes, it will need to be re-taped. You mentioned "re-occuring", has it been fixed before? Does the wall move any where the door is? It may just be a settling crack. It is on a taped joint right? Is it cracked on the side the door swings open or closed? Get back with me and I will try to help.

Hey Chip, Thanks for your reply, and thanks for helping everone here. I think the crack could be on a sheetrock
seam. I noticed it a couple of days after the primer dried.
And now it's reappearing again about 2 weeks after the finish coat. There is no door,it's just a doorway to a hall.
Again Chip, thanks for your help!!! Eric

You are welcome, I enjoy helping people, that is one reason I am here :)
It probably is a joint crack from settling, if it is a straight crack. You said it re-apeared after the finish coat,I am assuming it was never re-taped, so it must be a small crack if the paint covered it temporarily. For a quik fix(and most likely temporary) you could use a paintable latex caulk, appliing on the crack and forcing it in with your finger and use a wet rag to wipe it all off the surface before it dries. This won't make it disapear but it will buy you some time to see if it is going to come back. The reason I say temporary is because if you tape it now and it comes back then you tape it again, well, the more you fix it the more it will show. So I would use the caulk to see if it is finished cracking. Then have a tape man come in and fix it, telling him you want the joint re-fastened with screws. Be sure if you use the caulk to remove all of it off the surface with a wet rag, or it will look horrible and be a pain for whoever re-tapes it.
Hope this helps,
