Not to jump ahead of Chipster, but..if you notice a lot of garbage in your primer....dust, hair, old paint chips, dirt,etc., etc., you can knock down the roughness on the texture with a piece of #220 sandpaper- LIGHTLY of coarse. If there's no roughness to the feel of the primer leave it alone and paint! Good Luck - JDX.....forever unregistered, self-employed, conservative republican painter!

JDX, long time no write :), Jump away,I hope nobody thinks I am trying to dominate the board (as it appears), I just enjoy helping people. I agree with you if it is walls that are being painted, I can't tell if its walls, trim, cabinets, a door, etc.

noriyuki, If it is woodwork, or a number of other things, then lightly sanding the primer coat is often nesasary whether there is trash in it or not.

BTW, I know JDX knows this, I am sure he is assuming it is walls by the way he mentioned texture.
