I want to build a quonset hut style greenhouse and I live in the mountains of southwestern Virginia. We get plenty of snow here. Can I go 17 feet wide with PVC pipe spaced 24 inches apart?

Don't suggest I go narrower. Non-negotiables dictate the width and roof style for space, location, and height reasons.

If I can do this, how large should the pipes be? Is one inch adequate?

I assume I will be using plenty of purlins for added rigidity. I will have no problem taking evasive measures to deal with ice or heavy snowfall, including additional heat and temporary floor bracing. I just want to make sure I don't build something I'll lose in a heavy rainstorm.

Thanks,
Thomas
