I would like to know if any one has an idea of how to get the bottom off a glass jar evenly without having to break it off and then grind for hours to get it even and level?

We used this trick to make sets of drinking glasses from quart beer bottles when I was a kid.
BE CAREFUL! (Use common sense, safety glasses and heavy gloves.)
Soak a string in mix of oil and gasoline. Tie around jar exactly where you want it. Light it. Stick it into water. Should pop off cleanly. Sand glass edge smooth with emory cloth.
