We recently bought a house with 60 year old fir floors. The floor appears to have been covered with carpet for at least the last 40 years. The floor also appears to have stain and some kind of dull finish on it. I rubbed a corner with Murphy's Oil soap and it looks quite nice. I'd like to uncover it and clean it up with mininal cost and hassle. Should I wash it? Wax it? And isn't fir a soft wood? How will that affect the issue? Thanks in advance for your advice!

I recently washed my oak flooring w. Murphy's and they came out beautifully.
I goofed when I used a water-based urethane coating, which is soft and marks easily. I'd recommend a chat with a floor guy for the fir floors. Don't know why noboby's gotten back to you on this site.

I have a similiar situation_ fifty-year old house, oak floors that have been covered by carpeting... what about using Brimwax to revitalize and protect, without getting into stripping and polyurethance?? any experts out there that can provide some good direction-
Thanks in advance.

I have a similar proble. Hardflooring, about 75 years old, long since covered by two layers of ceramic tile. I pryed all tile off, what remains is a paper residue almost blended with the wood in some places. In some places the paper scrapes up with a paint chipper. In others, the paper refuses to come up. Any ideas on washes or solutions to get it up?
