Can I lay wood flooring over a cement floor that previously had carpet laid on it? And how well does pine planks work as a wood flooring?

You cannot install solid 3/4" hardwood on concrete without firring it out and putting in a moisture barrier. If you want the look of hardwood on concrete above or below grade, look for an engineered wood product which is plyed layers of wood. More expensive than real solid wood, but beautiful.

I agree with Patricia. In considering you like the idea of pine I don't know of any engineered pines, the ones I have seen are reclaimed heart pine that can be floated or glued down on concrete. This particular product(prefinsihed) was a 5 ply by 5" in width from Harris-Tarkett. I've also seen other reclaimed made by Aged Woods that are the width of a common Longstrip flooring at 7 1/2" wide and that actually came unfinished. I'm sure a prefinished version is available.

Both products are pricey and look great but the HT is a soft reclaimed and dings real easy. I'll never understand Jim(buddy)for putting that in his showroom, as I leaned towards a Natural Maple. Now he regrets it...I was right againLOL.

Not right all the time ;)
