I have a large living room dining room area that I would like to have carpeted in the center with wood flooring around the edges meeting the walls. What is the standard depth the wood flooring should be before starting the carpet. Which should be installed first? The carpet or the wood floor?

Have the wood installed first. There is no standard height for the wood, it depends on the type of material and whether or not underlayment is used. In all cases the carpet can be finished off at the wood by tucking it directly or with the use of a molding.
