Can someone recommend how I can educate myself about finishes for wood floors. I am refinishing oak floors that are 50 years old and am struggling to choose a correct finish that will protect the floors adequately. I have used tongue oil in the past and ,although I have been very satisfied, I am concerned after reading some things in this site that tongue oil is not and adequate finish. I am interested in learning about penetrating vs surface and oil based vs water based. Thank you

I use oil based urethane made specifically for floors. I don't think you can beat a urethane. As for water vs. oil, there are a lot of opinions on this - each has its plusses and minuses. I personally protect wood with oil - not water.

Check out Basic Coatings web site @ www.basiccoatings.com. (http://www.basiccoatings.com.) You should be able to get some literature out of them. They also have 1&2 day seminars around the country in conjunction with 3M & Clark Sanders. You can also pick up a copy of Fine Homebuilding and look for back issues concerning stains & finishes.
