We're taking up carpet in some areas of our home, but I need to know how much carpet/pad I need to leave in the bedroom and closet door facings to apply a transition strip to the old terazzo.

Usually you stop the carpet right in the middle of the closed door. Cut it long(2"). Nail the Tackstrip/Z-bar or finish metals, then stretch the carpet up on the pins/tacks. And trim where you need it. Z-bar is cut ½" past the Z-bar and folded under Z-bar, then beat down to crimp it. Gold or silver metals are cut even with the metal after stretching. Tucked into the metal. Then stretched again as you beat it down with a rubber mallet.
