Have basement laundry room with old vinyl floor tiles.some coming up due to long wear. is it better to put down a commercial carpet or sheet vinyl in case the washer or commode should overflow.is high traffice area due to garage.gotten various advice from stores.

Sheet vinyl would be a better choice. Because of the high humidity level and high traffic area vinly will stand up better than carpet. If your washer leaks, it's easy to remove the water from a hard floor. Extracting water from a carpet is a difficult job and the carpet will probably have a foul odour till it dries.
Go with the vinyl.
