View Full Version : New tile over old

I was going to put the new tile over the old mosaic tile (as suggested).

However a 3rd party (not naming names) dosn't want this.

So to appease the 3rd party, I chisled out a few pieces of the old tile and they come up clean. (no thinset or mortar attached)

So my question IS, can I use thinset on top of this OLD thinset?

Do I have to do anything to prep it, if I go this way?

Should I use yet a different thinset for this type of application?

Thanks in Advance

Hi Mike,

Third parties do seem to have a way of interjecting their viewpoints.

Just scrape the old thin set as smooth as you can. Go over it with a damp sponge to remove dust residue.

Plain thin set will bond to the old stuff, but it might not be up to the tile you're using. I would use the multi-purpose (latex modified) just in case. A little overkill won't hurt a thing.
