We are looking to paint the plywood subfloor in our dining room, likely with a high gloss alkyd floor paint from BM. Obviously it will look best if the floor is perfectly smooth, by which I mean not even seeings the seams between the plywood sheets. There are other bumps here and there.
I could do any of
1) Ignore the imperfections; it's just a painted subfloor
2) Patch the worst areas with wood putty (but probably live with the seams between the sheets)
3) try a floor leveler.
4) Sand only (more or less) and skip trying to use a patching compound of some sort.

Can anybody weigh in on this? Can patching compounds withstand foot traffic, with the urethane-added alkyd floor paint on top? A patch job that doesn't last will look worse than nothing. Any products to recommend?

"Ignore the imperfections; it's just a painted subfloor" - that's probably the best solution.

I'd either live with or caulk the seams. Any patching compound is likely to crack. The knot holes and such could be filled with Durham's water putty - it's a bear to sand so apply it neatly. I suppose bondo, durabond and few others will also work ok. I suspect the worse part of leaving the voids is - that's where the dirt will gather

I've seen where some have painted plywood floors using a checker board pattern [or other design] If done right, that will further help to disguise the fact that it's a subfloor.
