I purchased a new stove, top works great, oven will not turn on, Lowe's replaced the stove 3 times, then told me i have a electrical problem. the breaker the works the stove looks like a small doubled 20amp breaker. could the cable (which is also new) 4 wire, which is the 220 go to a 110 breaker. what ideas could be wrong with the stove. the old stove worked. the burner burned out in the bottom, and it was very old so i decided to replace the entire stove . (free standing electric range whirlpool). i am at a loss of what to do. please can someone help me.

Hi Ellen, the 20 amp double breaker sounds a bit small for an electric range. You need to review the requirements for the range and then determine what you have available to power it.
Who is doing the installation work, you or other?
Find that book and let us know.

Is it a GE breaker box? What is the number on the end of the breaker handle? Has anyone measured the voltage at the receptacle?

I wonder what kind of employees the appliance dept has, and the training they offer, at Lowes, if they even thought that the stove might be faulty 2 more times, and not having either checked the breaker or test ran the stove after delivery. :thumbdn:
I enjoy reading stuff like this because it makes me feel proud of the quality work (the first time, without callbacks) I do for people. What you say is quite amazing. Unbelievable!
Are you sure that is the correct breaker that is supposed to be for the stove? You sure there not is one in the box that says 40/40 or 50/50? If you have a standard full size 240 volt stove, you should have a double 40 breaker, minimum. And the wire should be 8 gauge minimum, if you do. Or a double 50 breaker with 6 gauge wire.
If you indeed have a 20/20 breaker (who in the world would have done such a thing?), you may only have undersized(for stoves) 12 gauge wire running to the recepticle!
There is almost no sense discussing your problem until you actually get that wired up right from the panel box (unless of course you are mistaken about the 20/20 being the right breaker). Maybe this is a blessing in disguise.

Sounds like a half size breaker. It is possible on a GE breaker box to put the breaker in in such a way it supplies only 120v even though it is a 240v breaker.
Did you have a gas stove prior to this? Doesn't sound like it but just wondering. Why was the cable replaced? Who replaced it?
