Does anyone know of a source where I can buy replacement attic step springs? My door is sagging & I want to close it up before winter so I don't lose my heat up the attic.

I was thinking of rigging up something to tension the spring when closed but that is not the safe thing to do - it could lead to a broken spring and/or personal injury.

I'd prefer not to replace the entire attic step assembly but it is 20 years old, although in good sturdy condition. I was looking online at the units that don't use springs. Has anyone had any experience with them?

Thanks for any info.

This has been asked many times here. I don't think I've ever seen a real positive answer. A local industrial supply or old time hardware store might be able to help.

I'd probably rig some sort of latch and push it up somehow, then latch it.

You likely need more than springs. The hinge/pivot may be shot. Look for slop in the mechanism. There should be a manufaturers name somewhere on the door, maybe on a plaque, maybe just an ink stamp. Look them up on the internet. I have had fairly good luck doing this and finding parts.
