I have a round 14' old exhaust fan installed in my kitchen ceiling. I would like to remove it and install a flush mount light fixture. Is this possible?

most likely but what are you doing for exhausting the kitchen if you remove the exhaust fan?

We've redone the rest of the kitchen. There is one in the new hood/range microwave. The one I want to remove is original with the house (about 1971) and it's just a metal fan recessed in the ceiling. We weren't sure if we should remove it and patch the ceiling or if we could replace it with a light. I don't think it's actually an exhaust but more of just a fan.

if there is a hole, what would you attach the fixture to?

i would suggest repairing the hole and then mounting the fixture. It will prevent air leakage as well as preventing insulation from leaking and eventually falling from the fixture.
