I know this info is a little to late....but,you should never run a microwave with nothing in it(at least put a cup of water in there). I have not worked on microwaves but I know someone that does at sears and I went through some safety training on repairing them.

Please note:A microwave is one appliance you should never open up and try to repair yourself. It has a capacitor that if the safety discharge fails to discharge the capacitor it can hold a charge for over a year (unplugged) that will kill you.

I know of 1 instance where a repair technician was killed for the company I work for while working on a microwave.

Thanks for your reply,gHost. W:De unplugged the microwave and after it cooled down (about two hours), he plugged it back in and all was fine!!! I was advised never to touch the microwave again. Guess that means no cooking for me.
BTW-I thought I had set the timer, not the cook mode.
