Our Whirlpool Model LSQ9200PT0 top-loading direct drive washer has an odor that is becoming stronger with each use. The smell is something like stale cigarette smoke, however we don't smoke. This started a couple of weeks ago and it's definitely becoming stronger. The smell seems to be coming from outside the tub, but from inside the cabinet. The spin cycle is when it becomes noticable.

I'm thinking something to do with the brake, although I've been under the washer and all looks very clean and no obvious issues. Any thoughts what to look for?

dead mouse perhaps

fill it full of hot water and then dump 3 cups of bleach in basket. let it go through whole cycle
