I am about to drywall the ceiling in my living room and wondering what type of mud I should use. Can I use the pre-mixed tubs of all-purpose mud they sale at HD?

The all purpose joint compound [green lid] should be used for taping - it has better adhesive properties than the light weight muds do. Light weight mud is fine for the rest of it although if you only need one bucket - get the all purpose.
