Hi,
I have a HEIL heat pump and find the compressor outside will run for extended periods of time after the blower unit & tstat turn off (has reached desired temperature). It does appear to turn off on it's own, eventually. I can also get the compressor to turn off by switching the TSTAT to OFF. Switching it back to heat doesn't seem to turn the compressor back on until the next heat call. System is equipped with electric coil assist heat, if that info is important.
My first thought is it's a bad TSTAT (it's an older mercury-based Carrier TSTAT). I plan to run out today and find a replacement since we want a programmable thermostat anyway. I wanted to see what you all thought the problem could be if the thermostat doesn't solve it.
Thanks!

A followup: It ended up being the central air blower's motor relay board. The compressor was working properly.
A question: Now that the new board is in, i've noticed I can hear the fan significantly more clearly. Before the air from the vents was a quit "woosh" is now more of a "rrrruuuummmm" sound. I suppose it could be my imagination, just wanted to see if any experts had an explanation.
Thanks!
