Computers - Can't email pictures anymore

Using XP and compuserve. I can upload and sent regular files but when I go through the add attachment, open, attach with a picture, I get a message "compressing attached files now, please wait." When I hit sent I get file transfer screen saying now uploading picture but nothing ever happens, i.e. transfer indicator bar never goes over 0% and Compuserve says (not responding). Any ideas what the problem is?

How big are the picture files? Many ISPs limit the size of the file attachment. Try reducing the size of the picture or lowering the jpeg quality to decrease the file size.

I can't even send one picture at a time so the size of the file is not the problem. Used to be able to send many at one time. Problem must be something else.

It is the individual file size not necessarily the whole folder that might be causing the problem.
As a test try setting the resolution on your camera to 640 x 480, take a picture and try emailing it.
Also, try sending something very small like a Word document which should send with no trouble at all.
Also, are you trying to send File Attachment or a Picture.
Try sending it as a file attachment.

Cameras these days are coming out with very large resolution but unfortunately the size of each image if taken at the best quality is murder on storage and uploading.
There is a program (http://bluefive.pair.com/pixresizer.htm) that will make pictures smaller, is easy to use and is free if this is your problem.

Pictures should be resized anyway before sending in email. Microsoft has a free picture resizer. It must drive dial up users nuts to sit and wait for a high res picture to come through. Just as a test, get a free Yahoo or Gmail account and try sending a picture to yourself and see what happens.

I'm not sure what the difference is between sending a file attachment or a picture? I am simply trying to attach a picture to an email. The camera is a 7.2 Mpixil. Is there some other way to email a picture other than as an email attachment?

Outlook, for instance, allows you to copy and pastwe the picture right into the text body of the email. Pasting it into the email is my preference simply because attachments make me nervous. Have you tried a free Gmail account yet? Are you on dial up or broadband?

I have Verizon DSL with compuserve. I'll try Gmail and outlook tomorrow.
