HP Media Center M7100E running WinXP.

I get a loud whining sound from my PC at startup. Goes away once I login.

I added a Nvidia GT7600 video driver a couple months back because my motherboard video driver failed. Could this be related? Maybe I don't have enough juice to run it?

Does it actually go away when you log on or just after the computer has been on for a short time?

What does it sound like?

I'm thinking a bad fan. One of the bearings may be getting dry, either in the power supply, processor fan, or video fan.

Can you pop the cover and boot it? Try to isolate the location.

Or you could have a disk in the drive which must spool up and it will whine a little.

Mine whines too. Randomly. About every 3-5 days.
Usually after it has been on for 10-20min. Lasts about 5min then goes away. Or if I whap the side of the tower it quits. I assume it's the fan or brg. Someday I'll give it a lube job.

Take the cover off and clean it with a vacuum. Use a paint brush to lightly loosen the gunk as you hold the vacuum over the area. If you decide to clean the blades on the cooling fans, be gentle -- they break easily.

We have an ancient pacard bell (I mean 8 - 9 years old), and it makes the most godawful racket on startup if it's cold, but only for 1 minute or so.
