I have a 2001 F150 with a broken rear wheel stud.
Do I have to remove or loosen the axel to get the new stud in the hole? I've already removed all brake items and removed the 4 bolts holding the dust plate to the axel housing.

Check behind the broken stud for clearance, then drive the stud out. Position the new stud in place and using a stack of washers and a stud nut, tighten until the new stud is firmly seated.

I have already removed the broken stud.
I do not have enough clearance to put in the new stud.
So, back to my original ?.
Do I have to loosen the axel to install the new stud?

What I am wondering is why he loosened the brake backing plate.

If you needed to take out the axle, all you had to do is remove the inspection cover off the rear differential and remove the small bolt that goes through the pin and remove the pin and push in on the axle and when the C clip falls out - you can pull the axle out with no problem. That is - if it has a corporate style rear end that is similar to a GM.

Some of the new Ford and GM style wheel studs are kind of long and probably don't fit between the flange and the backing plate.

as i work at a ford dealer, -some times it is necessary to grind a 'flat' spot on the stud head/flange-sorta make 'D' shape of the head will allow cleareance.
