I have a 30' span of heating and air-return duct in the basement ceiling which is approx 42" wide. I want to enclose it somehow, but have limited head space as is, so am looking for options that would require the least amount of space to implement.
I'd prefer drywall, but don't know how I could do so without future sagging problems unless I fully framed the underside thus losing about 3 inches or so of head space and having to remove and shorten a couple of finished doors.
Would 1x3 strapping crossing the span on 16" centers provide sufficient added strength if 5/8 drywall was used?
Could I further strengthen it by attaching the strapping to the ducting itself?
Or am I just going to have to bite the bullet and lose that extra 2-3 inches?
Any and all ideas are more than welcome.
Thanks,
