We just noticed a rust spot at the bottom of my water heater. It is several inches in diameter and I don't know how long it's been there. There doesn't appear to be anything leaking and the water is heating ok.

The rust spot appears to be related to the burner near the base of the unit. When the burner is on, the spot is literally too hot to touch. I don't know whether this presents a safety hazard or not. The unit is about 8 years old.

Does anyone know why this rust spot has appeared and if I need to do anything about it? Does it mean there is definitely moisture somewhere? There doesn't appear to be any.

Thanks for your help.
