I have a Monessen ventless fireplace model GSF32NV that the builder installed in my home. I have never been able to use the fireplace as it smells and sets off the smoke detectors within a minute or so of turning it on. All the builder and installer would tell me is there is a burn in period of 3 or 4 hours and then it should be fine. Well, I have ran the fireplace for about 8 hours straight one Saturday, and had to disconnect the smoke alarms. It still does the same thing. I took the logs off and ran just the burner and there is no problem with that, no smell, no setting off the smoke detectors.I really would like to be able to use this fireplace, but just don't know how to fix this. Can I buy replacement logs with out the whole burner assembly? Any help would be appreciated.

If logs are ventless I would try cleaning the logs with a mild cleaning solution and tire brush , let dry , and retry .

Making sure logs are replaced close to original position

DO NOT try to clean those logs with detergent!! Any liquid that you put on those logs will only cause the cleaner and and contaminatins to soak deeply into the logs and ruin them. Vacuum them and put them back in the exact factory position.

Call Monessen Hearth in Paris, KY and talk with customer service and Mike Brooks will tell you your options.
