I am replacing an old Honeywell Round thermostat T87F with a new Round CT87K. There are only 2 wires, one white, the other is white with a black stripe. The instructions say to "wrap the wire with the label matching the letter on the old thermostat". I found no such lettering. So, I called the "technical support". She tells me that it doesn't make any difference on a 2 wire system, which wire goes to the "R" terminal or the "W" terminal. If it makes no difference , then why do the instructions tell you to mark those 2 wires? Is she correct, or am I going to destroy something by reversing the polarity? Any help would be appreciated!

For a two wire system it don't matter.

The reason they do this if you had 4 or 5 wires, then it does matter where the "Hot" wire goes.. Hot wire goes to R.

Before you put the stat on the wall, set the dipswitch to "Hot water heat/HE furnace" (3CPH)
