I have an old shower that has a mildew problem. I can't clean the mildew, because a lot of it I guess is under the caulking I did a couple years ago. So I decided I'm just going to remove all the old caulking and redo it. Previously I used regular Alex paintable caulk. This time, I'm wondering if I should use grout in the tile seams instead, or if I should use something like a 100% silicone sealant that is waterproof. I'll be replacing this shower in a few years so it doesn't matter how it looks. I just want to make sure it doesn't harbor mildew as badly as before and is waterproof. Thanks for any help.

Most professionals in the tile arena recommend that a joint between two surfaces not in the same plane...should be caulked, not grouted. The reason is grout tends to crack due to movement. So this means the corners, and the joint where wall meets floor.

some caulking tips:

> remove all the old caulk
> clean and dry well ( I blow down with a hair dryer). If possible treat with moldex, or such, but dry well before caulking.
> use a caulk rated as Tub/tile or Kitchen/bath. This means it will have a mildew additive
> make the smallest, neatest caulk bead that will fill the gap. less caulk = less maintenance.

Best preventative for mildew = ventilation. Run the fan. Put in a bigger fan.

Thanks a lot for the tips. I have a fan in the bathroom but actually never use it because I didn't see the point. I will start running it while the shower is on.
