Its time to replace the 27 yr+ gas forced air furnace on my terms, not when 'it' decides to go at 3AM in the middle of winter.

Have got one quote so far...selling on fear & $8000 g's doesn't work for me. ***********************
Thanks in advance.

Hi wendyl,

It is not reasonable to ask for specific recomendations in a forum like this.
You have no way of knowing the motives of the person making the recommendation.

Wow! "$8000 g's" is 8 million dollars!.................Quit a a lot to change a furnace. :D

I would suggest that if your furnace has not broken down yet you take some time to get many different quotes and try to get references from people you know.
Your city has a lot of good service companies and if you do your homework you should be able to find a good one.

Keep in mind that even though you say your furnace is currently working you are looking for prices in the busiest time of the heating season.
I would suggest that at the very least you find a company that can do a service and check up on your furnace.
If you do, make no mention to the service company that you are considering replacing it.
Also, if someone does condemn the heat exchanger get prices from others as well.

A few hundred dollars spent on a service may give you some peace of mind and delay your replacement until a time that may favor better pricing.

$8000 does sound like a lot. Does it include AC?

I had a a 24 year old gas furnace in the townhouse I purchased from a slumlord in May of 2005. Everything worked well for the summer, but in the fall, I still had second thoughts on the furnace before the heating season. After looking at the heat exchanger (which is very difficult to really get a good look at everything), I got concerned and called a large reputable firm for to check out the condition of the entire system, including the 10 year old AC. He immediately looked at the heat exchanged and immediately slapped on a red tag because of the a tight crack in the heat exchanger and pronounced the newer AC system (compressor, coil) just fine.

I got the salesman out and he gave me a price of $2700 for a new 2 stage burner 80% furnace (replacing a larger old 60% unit) with a D.C. variable speed fan after a deduction for the earlier service call. I called 2 other companies and they all suggested similar furnaces (different brands) for about the same price. No one suggested a 90+% unit because of my needs and the venting cost.

I chose the company that gave me the apparently honest inspection, since I had looked at many heat exchangers and had questions especially knowing how fast they can fail and what the dangers are. I also got the magical interest-free 1 year option because I was just ahead of the heating season. - It was the best thing I have done and I know I could have saved a few pennies or dollars if I really hunted around.

They showed up at 8:00AM and called the inspector for an inspection after they knew what they were facing. They left at 11:30 AM and the inspector showed up just after lunch and he approved everything immediately.

An added bonus was the comfort of the system with the variable speed fan and the apparent improvement of the older AC system (cost & comfort).

A good installation is worth the extra price.
