Hi all,
In wanting to pare the budget for out bathroom ranovation I am considering doing the demo of the bathroom myself and hiring out the rebuild. We have a 7' x 4' lovely burgundy fiberglass shower surround and a 6' x 3 1/2 ' burgundy fiberglass soaking tub. Early 80's vintage.

I have reasonable DIY skills and tools (circ saw, sawz all etc.). How difficult is it to extract these units? The tub is set in a tiled deck platform which would be demo'd. If any one has any direct experience and can let me know what I'd be in for I'd appreciate it. From what I understand they would definitely have to be cut to make it out the door. Thanks so much.

Cheers,

Demo is always the easiest. The sawzall will make quick work of getting the tub/shower out. Just be careful around the drain area when pulling the units out. You may have to replace the risers for them when you are done, but that's not a big deal. Wear proper safety glasses and leather gloves.

Cut them into 3 pieces, remove the middle piece, the back piece, and then, after removing all the drain, etc. remove the front piece. Be aware, however, the unit may be sitting in a bed of thinset, and it will play havoc with your blades, so if you see a spark, back off a little and cut just the fiberglas.
