I used, before knowing not to, a tile adhesive that stated it could be used on shower walls. It is taking a while to set. Should I try and remove the tiles I set with the adhesive and start over, or just leave it and see what happens? I'm nervous after reading all the forums.

Yes, remove them if you can. The sooner the better. Tile adhesive, aka mastic is horrible in a shower. Many many failures can be attributed to it's use in a wet area. Soak the affected tiles in water and scrape the stuff off, then use regular thinset to reapply.

Yeah, I started to remove them right after I posted the question. I didn't want to chance it. Some of the tiles won't come off easily and are affecting the tile backer. So I think I need to remove the whole wall and start over. So much work...

I would, yes. I know it's not what you want to hear but it would be the right thing to do. Now, you might be able to get away with not removing the tiles that will not see direct contact with water......
It's actually better you discovered your mistake this early instead of a few months or years down the road.

Cannot stress the importance of research on things you're not a pro at. Last week, the guy at HD practically sold me on AcrylPro, "This is the best stuff to use. Perfect for tub surround!" Sure enough, I brought it back a couple of days later.
In general, learning how to tile has been sort of stressful so far. There are so many inconsistencies in the trade, so much lack or mis-information. For example, AcrylPro clearly states on the back "Suitable for wet locations such as Showers or Tub Surrounds." On the back of Versabond or Flexbond no such thing...not even a mention for wet applications.
Wish you luck with your re-tiling the right way!
