this may be a dumb question. can you cut a hole through a 2x12 floor joist to run bathroom fan ducting through it? or can you just notch it out? what type of reinforcement would be required?

perhaps i should measure before posting. the joist is 2x10.

I know you can't move it past the joist to avoid cutting it, right? If you notch the 2x10, you will weaken it. In order to bring it back up to par, you will need to bridge it between the two adjacent joists on both ends of your cut. Plumbers (bless their hearts) are the world's worst joist cutters. They don't tell us they have cut them, so we have to go back and support places that will fall in a few years, especially under commodes.

How big is the duct?

From what I can recall you can drill up to a 3 1/16" hole in a 2x10 to run wires in the center.

I'd probably attach some 3/4" plywood to both sides to help reinforce the area, using construction adhesive too.

Hope it helps.

3 1/2 inch is max size otherwise you will have to " sister jointed" or box support that can get pain in butt if not done right.

3/4 inch plywood work pretty well on both side and make sure you use 16 penny nail to drive it in good or get a cartage bolt that really clamp it down good.
