I am trying to construct a hoist to lift an ATV about 7-8'. The ATV weighs about 650lbs. I would like to attach a hoist, most likely a chain hoist to one of the 2x6 roof rafters, in my open ceiling garage. In order for the ATV to be placed where I want it, the chain hoist will need to be place 4-5' from the ridge. My question is will the rafter hold this type of weight safely and without causing damage to the roof? My sense tells me that the rafter will have to stregthened in some fashion. Can anyone give thier ideas to this?

No residential roof framing is designed for this kind of load. You need a steel beam supported on wood or steel columns which will transfer the load to the floor independent of the house framing. Good luck
