This is no big deal, just a little aggravating. I recently upgraded to IE8 from IE6. A lot of the icons used for desktop shortcuts either changed or just went blank. Is there anything I can do without spending a lot of money?
In addition I have not yet upgraded to SP3. I am running an HP Pavillion with Windows XP home edition. We have our virus protection with F-Secure through our cable provider. If anyone is familier with this program, what must I do before downloading SP3?

In order to get the icons back, just click start, all programs, then find the program you want to shortcut, right click on it and click shortcut. Computers have the propensity of cleaning themselves up, so that is probably what happened when you upgraded to IE8.
As far as updating your Operating System, you can go to the Microsoft site and download SP3 without much problem.

Getting the "real" Internet Explorer icon is a bit more complicated.
From Microsoft
"Click Start, and then click Run. Or, click Start Search if it is available.
In the Open box or in the Start Search box, type Notepad, and then press ENTER.
Carefully copy and paste the following text into Notepad.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel]
"{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\ClassicStartMenu]
"{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}"=dword:00000000

On the File menu, click Save As.
In the File name box, type Ie.reg, and then save the file to your desktop.
Exit Notepad.
Double-click the Ie.reg file on the desktop.

Or, just open the registry editor and navigate to those keys and make a new dword value as named above and give them a value of 0.
They are probably already there. You just have to mofify them with the new value.

Look in the recycle bin for the missing icons.

In internet explorer, navigate to Microsoft Windows Update (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and follow the steps listed to get updates to Windows, including SP3.

Try TweakXP. That has a rebuild icons function (plus loads of other useful things). It is available from MS
