Gulp! When the toilets are flushed, they empty but make a slight whooshing sound. The water in the bowl is clear with a slight foamy substance on top. But WHOA, when I look in the tank, the water is grungy and looks a little oily and there is some debris/dirt on the bottom of the tank. Long dark stringy things (not alive mind you) are accumulating on the bottom. Have never seen such a thing. I am totally grossed out. Does anyone have any ideas? I am on a well & septic.

You can get all sorts of bacteria and scum growing in the tank even on city water. There is possibly some sand or grit in the bottom of the tank as well. If it bothers you try to remove as much of the solid debris on the bottom by picking it out of the tank. DO NOT try to push it down the drain. Larger pieces may clog the water passages of the toilet bowl rim. scrub the sides of the tank and flush the toilet. No matter what you do though the scum will grow back. Nature finds a way to survive anywhere.
