I have a Ideal 7X16 door with one 48" torsion spring.
It "squeaks" during the first 1/3 of the way up. It appears to be the coils of the spring rubbing together. Is this common? I never noticed it the first 6mo I had the door. Can I lube it with something? Or maybe it's something else.

Also, how dependable are those springs? Somewhat pricey, and I can't get the car out if the spring breaks.

Yes..you can close the door and just run a bead of 3n1 or other light oil across the top of the spring, then open it to distribute the oil. That should help.

I much prefer torsion springs over extension...yes more costly to replace and have adjusted..but more dependable.

You should be able to find maintenance tips and instructions at their website or in the manual.

Actually, I had to disassemble everything to do some other work. But I put the spring back on the shaft exactly where it had been. (Although lying on the floor limp it was about 2" shorter than what it measured new)
The installation inst. say to measure it limp and install it at the exact same length. I was tempted to shorten it up on the shaft, but thought I better reinstall as it was.
I didn't notice the squeak until reinstalled. I'll check again. Maybe something else is rubbing. Maybe a roller.....

Manufacturers often recommend that you hose down a new spring installation with a good lubricant(not WD40) after installation.

Annually do the following:
Lubrication
Lubricate all moving parts of the door with light
household oil, including:
• Lift cables at the bottom bracket button,
• Bearing of the sheaves,
• Lock hardware where surfaces turn or slide,
• Full length of torsion spring to reduce friction
between coils,
• Lubricate steel rollers. DO NOT lubricate nylon
rollers.
