I painted my exterior door moulding and some of the putty on the holes had not been sanded down. What is the best way to handle this? Should I sand it and then repaint it? It was painted 2 days ago. Also, there were some staples holes in the cedar fascia the had not been filled. Should I just fill them with caulking or wood putty? Should it be applied directly on the painted surface? Any tips are appreciated.

Well this is how we learn... PREP..is the hardest part of any job..but the outcome is worth all the time. So now you sand the spots that need to be sanded...plus the spots with paint in the holes... then with a tack cloth remove all the paint/spackle/filler dust.. fill the holes... let dry... sand smooth.. remove dust again with tack cloth (prevent gritty texture) then prime, let dry.. and REPAINT! GOOD LUCK it'll look great after all the prepwork is competed and it is repainted!

wood filler is to fill in wood products... spackle is for sheet rock...or plaster boards.. caulking is not regularly used to fill in holes..it is best used to fill in gaps where items MEET..like windows and doors...and tubs/sinks etc.... so use wood filler

Depending on how much filler was left, it might be easier/quicker to "cut" off the excess with a putty knife. Painter's putty is the best filler for the job, spackling can be used but it should be the exterior variety if used on the outside. Caulking tends to shrink so it doesn't look great when used to fill nail/staple holes.
