Desk top is Dell Dimensions 3000
recommended ram is DDR PC2700
computer now has 256mb
I have 2 sticks of DDR PC2100 with 256mb each.
Can I use this instead of the PC2700? What is the difference? Thanks for the help.

It might work..but it will run slower. It may not be noticable, but its not something I would do, esp with memory being so cheap. You can normally go faster...but not slower.

The difference is the speed.
PC2100 is slower than PC2700. Your computer will only run as fast as the memory allows, so you will slow down your computer some. While not likely, you could possibly have memory errors as well.
Will the advantage of the extra memory help? I don't know.

You won't notice a difference, in fact it should seem much faster with an extra 512mb of ram.
the motherboard will run all the ram at the speed of the slowest stick, so by putting in pc2100 you make the existing pc2700 downgrade their speed to pc2100 to match. Not a huge difference, and you probably won't notice, so put it in!

I just tried it out on a machine on my bench. If you are running XP, you will notice an improvement. You only have two slots so put the two sticks of pc2100 in.
By the way, that machine will support pc3200 so if you see a couple of sticks of that around within your budget, go for it.
If you receive a message after you restart saying something like "Memory available limited to 256M", restart, go into the BIOS and turn off "OS Install", save and exit.
You should be good to go.
