I'd like to add the hallway lighting outside my bedroom to my existing X10 home automation system. However, as we use CFL units, two-wire switch modules cannot be used.
I've identified the WS13a [1] (http://www.x10.com/automation/ws13a_s.html) [2] (http://kbase.x10.com/wiki/WS13A) as the appropriate switch for the job (and determined that I'll have to remote-control the laundry area lighting instead) but the color-coding on the wires in the switchbox doesn't match the color coding used.
Is it safe to assume that the red wire in this photo is what the diagram on link [1] refers to as "neutral"? If not, what steps can I take to identify which wire is which?

If it helps, I have a digital multimeter with 200V AC and 600V AC voltage test modes, but I've never used it to test anything more dangerous than 5/12V DC voltage and continuity testing. (My main use for it is continuity testing when custom-building/repairing cables for my computer)

With the power off, remove the switch and the light that the switch controls. It looks to me like the red wire has been cut off and it is only a switch loop (maybe) Let us know what wires you have in the two boxes (switch and light) and hopefully we can set you up.

Noted. I'll get to that in a week or so.
It's a "shop lighting" (two-tube, non-recessed fluorescent) fixture, I have no experience installing/removing/replacing that kind of fixture, and I've got a project coming due soon so I can't afford to potentially spend an entire afternoon on it. (I always budget extra)

Despite my supposed vacation, I've been far too busy to find time to remove the light fixtures and check the wires.
I'll leave myself a reminder, but it could be a long time before I get to it.

Unfortunately, even if I had coffee on hand, the combination of (professionally diagnosed) Asperger Syndrome and A.D.D. that I have seems to render caffeine useless.
I can drink two cups of coffee back-to-back and then fall asleep just as easily as without any.
