View Full Version : Zone Valve Issue?

I have 5 zone valves connected to my Peerless oil burner with internal hot water coil. This is vented through a power vent. I have noticed over the past few days that sometimes, the sequence would start, then the pump would shut down prior to ingition. And would seemlingly get stuck there. Although after maybe a dozen attempts, it will ignite. Reset light not on. I have cleared it up by turning off the power and turning it back on.

However, tonight it didnt clear up. Now I see that one of the zone valves, when calling for heat, is just spinning. I turned that tstat off and all seems to be ok. Do I have a bad zone valve? Tstat? Something else?

I think you have multiple problems...

If the burner is shutting down and not lighting, that could be a number of reasons, and should be looked at by a tech.

The zone valve issue is probably a separate thing.

When was the last time the burner was serviced?

installed 11/07, service 11/08.

I think that the zone valve is calling for heat, the power vent turns on, developes draw for 20 seconds, pump turns on, then the valve, still spinning, doesnt want heat and shuts off the pump? then spins some more and over and over?

All other zones and water coil work normally.

OK, I think I didn't understand...

Maybe not an issue with the burner then, if all the others work normally, but still, you should have service each and every year on the burner... so that should still be done.

Honeywell zone valves?

I guess the easiest thing to do would be replace the powerhead on the zone valve. It does sound like it's not doing what it should be doing...

Thanks for the help!

Yes, honeywell valves. I was going to pick one up tomorrow and pop it in. I did not change the valves when I replaced the furnace (I did the install myself). I am guessing that this valve is original to the first furnace dating to 1980ish. I thought I had one laying around but I cant seem to find it.

We intend to have it services in the next couple of weeks. Thinking of doing it myself. Bad idea?

Bad idea? I dunno... depends...

Anyone can get dirty and brush and vacuum the heat exchanger and combustion chamber I guess.

Changing the nozzle, setting the electrodes, that's not too awful difficult for a moderately skilled homeowner... if you have the specs and measurements...

changing the oil filter... pretty easy usually.

The problem comes when you go to set up the combustion. It really should be done with instruments (around here even the pros don't seem to own them, let alone know how to use them), and the burner should be set up for the proper 'smoke' and CO2 (or O2).

When you had it serviced last year, did you watch? That's what I would suggest. Schedule the service for a time when you can be there, and while trying not to be a PITA to the tech, watch and ask as many questions as he will let you get away with before he gets tired of answering them.
