In June '08 we had a Carrier 48xz system installed with a Honeywell VisionPro TH8000 series thermostat. In August the TH80000 quit working and only showed "EE". Since the whole system is under warranty the tech replaced the thermostat with the same model and it showed "EE" within a few minutes. He then replaced it with a TH4000 because it wasn't as complicated for him and after talking to Honeywell he replaced the temp sensor and moved it away from the power cable to the systm.

I preferred the programmability of the TH8000. I could see the outdoor and indoor temp on it and it would automatically change from Heat to cool. The TH4000 does not automatically change and I can't see the temp outside.

My question is: Is there another thermostat out there that has the programmability of the TH8000 that will work with my system?

I have looked at what Lowe's offers and cannot decide if the Hunter thermostats will work. The Hunter 44860 is the one I like the most at this point as it also will track energy usage.

Thank you!
Debbie

I've never seen the "EE" on a VisionPro.

Was it just on the outdoor temp reading or on the whole screen?

Stay away from Hunter thermostat.. They make great fans, but not t-stat.

Honeywell is the only way to go.

The whole screen went blank and the only thing that showed was the EE.

I received different responses about the error and the tech also had different responses. Honeywell finally convinced him that the outside temp sensor was too close to the power cable and it fried the circuit board in the stat. But, it actually happened to 3 TH8000. Yes, we tried it 3 times... :)
On the last go the tech had brought the TH4000 as well as the TH8000 so when the 8000 didn't work he put in the 4000 as well as replaced the outdoor temp sensor.

Any replacement ideas would be appreciated. I still have two bad TH8000's that I would be happy to send to you so you can see the error. I have not gotten rid of them yet, but don't know why I am saving them either.

Thanks,
Debbie

Does the EE still show up with out the wires hooked up? (Batteries in place)

A step down from the VisoinPro is the FocusPro TH6000.

With the outdoor sensor on the VP, do you have a heat pump?

I won't mind taking the VP off your hand if you want to send it my way.

I just pulled the two non-working 8000's out and put batteries in them, without them hooked up to anything they both show EE.

The 48xz, as I understand it, is electric heat/cool until the outside temp gets down to 40 (TH8000 was programmed for 40) then the gas pack kicks in to heat the house as emergency heat. I am not sure what the 4000 is set to.

The 8000's are nice paperweights, but if you want them, I will send them.

I would be happy to add the 4000 to the box when/if I get a better replacement for it.

The t-stat you got now has no "lock out" settings, it will run the heat pump all times, untill you switch over to emergceny heat.

Do you know if the dealer had the outdoor senor wired by itself or was it sharing the same wire as rest of the t-stat from the unit outside.

Only other t-stat you can get with an outdoor sensor set up is the Honeywell IAQ t-stat. Nice thing about the IAQ, you can take a full advantage of your blower in A/C mode.

The installer ran a new line from the unit to the stat and it is the only wire, so the temp sensor must be sharing the same wire.

The outdoor sensor has to be by itself. (18-2 wire)

Not sure if sharing the same wire may of cause the t-stat to do what it did.

So, regardless of which stat I go with (upgrade to current model) the temp sensor should be on its own wire?

yes, the outdoor sensor should be on it's own wire, otherwise, will have an electrical interference, it that is maybe why you been getting the "EE" reading.

I just shot an e-mail to a guy at Honeywell and see what he has to say.

Debbie,

I got a reply back from Honeywell, and see below.

I’m wondering if you could get some additional information for me. Most specifically the name of the dealer she has been working with and the City and state she is located in would be the best place to start.

Thanks,

So, can you e-mail me the info, and I will forward it to him.

My e-mail is jaymarking at gmail dot com

I sent you an email with the requested info.

Also, I was looking at stats in Home Depot. What do you think of the Ritetemp brand? It seems to have all of the features I would like except that the ext temp sensor would not be hooked up to anything.

Your opinion?
