I just found an old hs tarm I can get my hands on for $500. Problem is they know nothing about it. I looked at it the fire box looks good but after that I dont know what else to look for. I am wonder if there is any way to figure out what model it is , and if there are any specific trouble spots I should be checkin. Thanks Jim

Jim, you probably won't find much... I think I have a PDF of a manual for one around here somewhere... if I can find it, I'll PM ya and get an email address... please don't post emails on the forum though...
Obviously I don't know if it will be for your model, but it might be a help somehow.
One thing that you need to know... does it leak? is it cracked? etc... risky bidness...
I think $500 is actually a bit steep though... and in fact they should probably pay you to take it... not that it's a bad unit, but just that there is no market for used boilers really... offer them $200 and see what happens.
