Need advice and direction on replacing inadequate memory. If worthwhile, where to find replacement items. Appreciate your inputs.

You can find the detailed specs of your system here - Product Specifications and What Ships in the Box HP Pavilion xe783 Desktop PC (US) - HP Customer Care (United States - English) (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph06558&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=81921)
If you check out the Memory section it says you should have '64 MB PC 100' upgradeable to a max of '512 MB (2 x 256 MB DIMMs)'
but it also says 'Free DIMM slots may vary due to availability of memory components at the time the PC is manufactured.'
Basically, you'll want to open up the case and visually verify that you've got two slots for your RAM - but I'd be surprised if you don't.
The kind of RAM you'll want to put in is "SDRAM
100 MHz, Intel PC SDRAM unbuffered DIMM specification, revision 1.0 compliant"
You might have trouble finding it at your local PC shop; I'm guessing this is an older PC; I'd recommend ordering it off the internet. NewEgg.com or TigerDirect.com are good choices.
I think your best choice would be go with the 256mb sticks. It's the most memory your system will support and it's only a few dollars more than the 128mb sticks.
I think two of these would be perfect: Newegg.com - Mushkin Enhanced Essentials 256MB 168-Pin SDRAM PC 100 System Memory Model 990107 - Desktop Memory (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146079)
